About Chetna
The cotton in Alva’s products is sourced from small scale farms in India, all members of Chetna Organic, with whom we have a dear and close collaboration. Chetna is a cooperative within which members commit to organic farming, get fair pay for their harvests and benefits from social security.
Biggest challenge ever
Currently the farmers of Chetna Organic are facing one of the most serious challenges ever. Several of their collaboration partners have cancelled their cotton orders, resulting in large quantities of unsold cotton from last year’s harvest, and with that the inability to pay out salaries. In addition to this, Chetna has committed to ordering non-genetically modified cotton seeds for sowing next year’s harvest. If forced to cancel this approaching order, Chetna will instead have to purchase seeds from the open market, offering only genetically modified seeds. This would result in Chetna losing their certifications and all that has been built up during these past 12 years will go lost. The farmers will then be forced to go back to grow cotton in the conventional way, with all the negative consequences involved.
In light of this, and considering we value our collaboration with Chetna highly, Alva has decided to send USD12,000 (approximately SEK116,400) to Chetna Organic, in the shape of advances and contributions, to support them through these challenging times and with hope that brighter days are on the horizon. Sleep well from us at Alva!
